Checkerboard Film Foundation was founded in 1979 to document individuals on film and video who have made significant contributions to the American arts for educational and archival purposes. Checkerboard has been awarded a grant by the Barbara Lee Family Foundation Fund at the Boston Foundation to produce a 40 minute video on Kiki Smith, co-directed by Vivien Bittencourt and Vincent Katz. In the summer of 2004, Checkerboard set out to document Kiki's creative process, visiting her home every few weeks with a small video crew. Their video focuses on Homespun Tales, a site-specific installation by the artist in the summer of 2005, at the Querini Stampalia Foundation, located in a palazzo in Venice. In this stunning exhibition, Smith deals with faith, sexuality and childhood, female duty and role, dream and daily life.
